11 weeks before its budget-setting ministerial conference, ESA worries about NASA, and about France

BALTIMORE — The European Space Agency (ESA) has planned a Sept. 19 meeting with the heads of its 23 national delegations to assess how best to prepare in the event NASA’s 2026 budget falls short of the tentative compromise reached in Washington in July.

The timing of the US and ESA’s budget decisions couldn’t be worse. The US government budget for 2026 may not be known before November or December despite the start of the 2026 fiscal year on Oct. 1.
