Saudi Neo Space Group: Satellite broadband to smartphones? Likely uneconomic. But we’re bullish on narrowband NTN

LA PLATA, Maryland — Neo Space Group (NSG), created a year ago by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund to be the spearhead for Saudi space technology development in Earth observation, navigation, broadband and IoT services, has concluded that broadband to unmodified smartphones is uneconomic, at least for now.

Instead, NSG is separating its broadband and its IoT ambitions, with the latter focusing on messaging, similar to what Apple and Globalstar are now doing and what Iridium Communications is developing.
